Market Press Release – February 20, 2012 5:47 pm – With summer on the way, one thing will be on the minds of many a tech enthusiast; the release of the latest Apple iPhone. Last summer we welcomed the iPhone 4S among the predicted media hype and long lines of people eager to get their hands on the new gadget at Apple stores all over the world. With the iPhone 5 on the way we can expect similar scenes, but will the phone live up its predecessors?
Until the iPhone 5 is officially unveiled, we will not know for sure what the exact features of the phone will be. As with the previous iPhone releases, there are already plenty of online rumours, and websites claiming to be in possession of leaked photos and spec sheets.
From previous iPhone releases, we can build up a good picture of the features this phone is likely to boast. With every iPhone release we have seen an improved camera, so it is only natural to assume that this trend will continue with the iPhone 5. The latest phone in the range has an 8 megapixel camera, and several new smartphones like the Sony Xperia S has a 12 megapixel camera. Therefore it would be a big surprise if the new Apple phone does not match or even outdo this resolution. Of course, we can also expect 1080p video capture, and the standard package of features like autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus and an LED flash. The camera software is also sure to see a number of improvements, as this runs as part of the iOS platform, which has seen a new version released with every iPhone model; so we can expect a new version of the operating system to be released alongside the new handset.

In terms of the design of the phone, many agree that a completely fresh new look will be implemented with the iPhone 5. In the past, the iPhone 3GS kept the same look as its predecessor as did the iPhone 4S, with the same styling as the iPhone 4. As the iPhone 5 is likely to be a completely new version, the design is therefore likely to change. There are several characteristics to the iPhone’s design that are likely to remain, however. All iPhone models have kept the same basic form factor, with a single home button at the base of the screen. This will probably remain, as Apple will want to people to know it is an iPhone at first glance.
As well as the camera and the aesthetics of the handset, we are also likely to be treated to an enhanced screen resolution, and possibly a larger screen. Processors are a hot topic with smartphones at the moment as well, so it is highly likely that a powerful dual-core, or even quad-core processor will be incorporated which will allow improved performance from the hardware and more powerful apps to be developed for this iPhone.
As with previous Apple phone releases, it is likely that one network will be given the rights to distribute the phone in the UK to begin with, with others following suit shortly after resulting in competition to offer the best deals to its customers. When it is released, I will be sure to cover the iPhone 5 and its features in a lot more detail in future articles.
