13 July 2012, USA(Acedrugstore.com): As per a recent meta-analysis study conducted by researchers of the Miriam Hospital, it has been found that the individuals suffering from the most common form of diabetes (Type 2 diabetes) were at 20% higher risk of acquiring various types of blood cancers such as leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma.

The current study included around 26 previously analyzed research studies that were based on the relation between the most common health illness of the current world, i.e.; type 2 diabetes and a variety of blood cancers such as myeloma, leukemia and lymphoma, More than 17,000 cases of people afflicted with type 2 diabetes and blood cancer all over the world were taken into account through this study.

Jorge Castillo, lead author of the study and M.D working as an oncologist and hematologist with Miriam Hospital said that the first thought that comes to mind when people think of risk factors associated with diabetes include either heart diseases or kidney ailments.

But, the fact that around 19 million Americans are afflicted with Type 2 diabetes and the figure is expected to go on a drastic surge in the near future affecting many more people and in such case 20% is not a small number to ignore, which is the risk of developing a blood cancer in people with the sweet disease.
The researchers through their investigative study found that Type 2 diabetic patients are at increased risk of acquiring myeloma, leukemia as well as non-Hodgkin lymphoma along with its subtype called as peripheral T-cell lymphoma. They also concluded that no relation between diabetes and Hodgkin lymphoma was observed by them.

The study also sheds a light on an interesting fact, which established the link of developing the above three types of blood cancer differ with the geographical area.
