The iPhone 4 Becomes The Slimmest Smartphone |
There is no question that the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S2 are two of the best phones that you will encounter and despite Apple having the edge on paper in practice there is very little to choose between the two devices. |

Market Press Release – September 26, 2011 9:15 am – One of the appealing aspects of a modern mobile phone to many consumers is the devices overall depth. Over the past few months we have seen handsets from the likes of Apple, Motorola and Samsung all claim to be the worlds slimmest phone. Until recently the esteemed Samsung Galaxy S2 held the title but a ruling has now revealed that the handset can no longer claim this title meaning that the iPhone 4 now holds the crown.
The Samsung Galaxy S2 is an incredibly slim device which at its thinnest point measures just 8.71mm. If this was the overall depth of the phone then the handset would certainly be the thinnest available. The Galaxy S2 does feature a hump towards the bottom of the back panel and this is where the problems lies. This deeper section of the chassis actually measures 9.91 mm thick. The UK Advertising Standards Authority have ruled that the depth of the handset should be measured at its deepest point and not its thinnest. The Apple iPhone 4 therefore has become the slimmest handset available as the deepest part of its body measures just 9.3mm. Anybody who has used both of these handsets will testify that the Samsung certainly feels like the slimmer model however in the eyes of the law the iPhone 4 is officially slimmer and can use the title in subsequent advertising. This may all be several months too late for Apple with the launch of the new iPhone 5 just around the corner but it is still an area where one of their main competitors cannot gain the upper hand.

Not only can the iPhone 4 call itself the slimmest smartphone but it already boasts the best quality screen available in the shape of its Retina Display. A combination of the screens extremely high resolution together with its relatively small size means that the handset offers a pixels per inch rating that is higher than any other phone. The screen can display a resolution of 960 x 640 and this equates to a PPI rating of 326. When you compare this figure to the 218 PPI that is present on the Galaxy S2 it is clear to see that the iPhone 4 is streets ahead in terms of quality. You could argue that the Super AMOLED screen used on the Samsung offers more vivid colours than the S-LCD display on the Apple but when it boils down to actual figures the screen, just like the phones overall depth, is the best you will find anywhere.
There is no question that the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S2 are two of the best phones that you will encounter and despite Apple having the edge on paper in practice there is very little to choose between the two devices.
