Market Press Release – October 13, 2011 9:53 am – Two of the biggest names in the mobile phone world go head to head in this comparison. The new iPhone 4 8GB from Apple has just been released whilst the Blackberry Torch 9800 has proven one of the most popular models of the past 12 months. Both of these phones prove that there is still plenty of life in the old dog, even with new and more illustrious models being released. Here we see which of these superb models should be grabbing your attention.

Both of these devices prove well endowed in the power department. The iPhone 4 8GB sports the same chipset that is used in the original iPad. This means the model offers a fast 1Ghz processor that moves things along at a steady pace. The Torch 9800 actually offers a much smaller processor at just 684Mhz but thanks to the better power management offered by the device the phone actually feels faster than its Apple rival. This speed is beneficial to a number of areas of the phone but the superb new browser seems lightning fast. This new WebKit based application supports tabbed browsing and offers a complete online experience. The Safari browser present on the iPhone 4 8GB does offer the facility for viewing multiple pages but surfing the web is never quite as smooth as the full tabbed experience present on the Blackberry. Things look up for the iPhone when we examine the screen technology used on these phones. The Apple offers a superb 640 x 960 from its LED backlit Retina display compared to the more modest 360 x 480 on the Torch 9800. Both of these phone have screens slightly smaller than the industry standard with the iPhone displaying 3.5 inches and the Blackberry 3.2 inches.

A vital aspect of the modern smartphone is its ability to download a variety of applications from the manufacturers web store. These applications can range from games to utilities and all of the major platforms offer a fairly comprehensive selection. In this comparison there is no doubt that the iPhone 4 8GB comes out on top. Apple offers a massive selection that will appeal to both the general consumer as well as the more professional user. Blackberry do offer some impressive business tools but their selection is generally far less than what Apple can offer. In order to store these application the handsets need to offer a good level of capacity and both of these models do not disappoint. Despite offering a lower capacity than earlier versions the 8GB present on the iPhone 4 is ample for the average user although the model does not offer any support for external memory cards. The Blackberry offers half of this internal capacity but does feature a micro SD card slot meaning that a further 32GB can be added if required.

Despite both of these big names releasing new models these two veterans still offer a great smartphone experience. The iPhone 4 8GB proves the better handset but the Torch 9800 certainly gives it a good run for its money.
