Market Press Release – December 9, 2011 2:02 pm – For the last few years, many have seen the Apple iPhone series as the benchmark to which other smartphones should be compared. The new iPhone 4S is no different. Competition for the market dominating iPhone series is hotting up though, and several manufacturers are releasing increasingly impressive smartphones.
The new Motorola RAZR is one such example. In this article I will compare some of the key features of the Motorola RAZR with those of the popular new iPhone 4S to see which one comes out on top.
Apple Can No Longer Claim the Thinnest Smartphone In The World...
The iPhone 4S keeps the shape and aesthetics of the iPhone 4, as this is widely regarded as the best looking smartphone on the market, and offers outstanding build quality. Until recently, this design was marketed as the thinnest smartphone in the world. This is no longer the case though, as several newly released handsets are thinner than the 9.3mm profile of the iPhone 4S. The new title holder is the Motorola RAZR which somehow packs its impressive spec list into a handset which is just 7.1mm thick.
Screen Resolution
The iPhone 4S is renowned as having one of the highest resolution touchscreens of any smartphone. The resolution of 640x 960 has been dubbed as the “retina” display as the pixel resolution is so fine that individual pixels cannot be distinguished by the naked eye. Some new smartphones are now starting to beat this resolution, such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The Motorola RAZR comes close with its resolution of 540x 960, matching handsets like the HTC Sensation. This is still a massive improvement over smartphone which were released just a year ago. It may be by a slight margin, but the iPhone 4S just beats the Motorola RAZR in this category.

Internet Browsing
Reading the spec lists of these two smartphone reads very similar in terms of internet browsing capabilities. Connection wise, both offer speeds of up to 14.4 megabytes per second in areas with 3G coverage, and both provide Wi-Fi connectivity. The main difference between the iPhone 4S and Motorola RAZR when it comes to web browsing is the browser software itself. The iPhone 4S relies on the popular Safari browser which is the default iOS browser whilst the Motorola RAZR relies on the default Android browser. Connection wise, the two are evenly matched, and the software in my opinion, comes down to personal preference. I would say that the two are evenly matched in the web browsing category.
Processor
The Apple iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to feature a dual-core processor. The 1 GHz dual-core Apple A5 chip is the same one that is found in the iPad 2 so it is certainly a proven piece of kit. The Motorola RAZR has a 1.2 GHz processor, which is also dual-core. This technology is fast becoming standard on most newly released smartphones. On paper, the Motorola RAZR beats the iPhone 4S in terms of processing power, but in practice it is unlikely that the majority of users would notice a difference when actually operating either phone.
Conclusion
In my opinion, choosing between these two smartphones largely comes down to personal preference. If you are already an iPhone fan, you will love the iPhone 4S, but if Android is the operating system for you, then the Motorola RAZR will likely take your fancy. Whichever you prefer, I must stress that both these phones are very impressive in nearly every aspect. There are many features where one phone beats the other, but overall, both are fantastic handsets, and you will not be disappointed if you choose either one.
