Market Press Release – October 10, 2011 10:12 am – The new HTC EVO 3D is one of the new Android smartphones released by HTC in July 2011, and hence its name, it is likely promising to evolve the trends with 3D. Now the question is, is 3D really a desirable feature on something as small as smartphones? In order to find out, let’s test it out to see whether this 3D phone is really evolving trends, or is it merely putting up some gimmicks to market itself?

The HTC EVO 3D certainly has much more than just a 3D Display, so let’s begin with its physical outlooks. The EVO 3D is black in colour with red highlights, just like a few other members of the HTC EVO family such as the EVO 4G and EVO View Android tablet. The rubber back and slim fit feels good to the hand with its texture, producing a good balance of a solid feel that is neither heavy nor bulky despite weighing 170 grams (6 ounces).

Having impressed us on the physicals, now let us turn on the HTC EVO 3D to see if it really has a 3D display. What impresses us is that its 3D screen does not require you to wear any special 3D glasses. Naturally, this is not the kind of ‘pop-out’ 3D that you would see in theatres wearing 3D glasses. It is literally trying to show you 3D effects on a 2D screen. While this sounds cool, the snag is that you have to view the phone at a very fixed angle to be able to see the 3D properly without any blurring. This is fine if you’re watching short clips, but anything longer like a movie would require you to prop it up at the right angle. Also, watching the 3D outdoors is futile as you won’t be able to see much in bright daylight. Fortunately, there is a toggle switch for you to turn these 3D effects on and off, should you wish to revert back to the standard 2D display.

With a 4.3-inch touchscreen, HTC EVO 3D sports a qHD resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, thus yielding an image quality of 256 ppi (pixels per inch). This is pretty good, though it still trails behind the iPhone’s Retina Display of 326 ppi. Being a touchscreen phone, it naturally packs the usual suite of features thanks to its proprietary HTC Sense UI, such as multi-touch sensitive controls, accelerometer, proximity and gyro sensors. One cool feature of the lockscreen is that it is ‘active’, literally using your homescreen as the screensaver which allows you to access quick info without having to unlock the homescreen.

The HTC EVO 3D was pretty fast and speedy in our tests, having dual-core processing power thanks to its 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. So at least in terms of speed, the processor does deliver, enabling full HD 1080p video capturing and playback at 30 fps, plus rendering them with its 3D effects right on its very own screen. This is definitely a handy feature to have. Additionally, there is a HDMI-out jack that allows viewing on 3D TV, and thanks to its MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) technology, the phone can be charged as well while viewing HDMI-out.

In a nutshell, the HTC EVO 3D is a highly capable phone. As we have seen, the 3D feature is unique and fun to have, though it is not the only thing that gives the EVO 3D its edge. It is technically the whole package of dual-core speed and usability put together with its other features that makes this phone desirable, with the added bonus of 3D.
