Market Press Release – February 18, 2012 1:56 pm – 2011 saw a number of high quality smartphones launched including the iPhone 4S and the HTC Sensation XL. It was the Samsung Galaxy S2 that went on to become the biggest success with consumers and critics with the model receiving various awards from industry experts. In 2012 there are several high profile models set to be launched and one of them is the excellent Sony Xperia S. We take a look at media features and design on this model and also the Galaxy S2 to see how they compare in these areas.

When we glance at the specification of the new Sony Xperia S there is one area that really does grab our attention and that is the camera facility. This model sports one of the highest quality cameras available on any smatphone. The device can capture still images that contain 12 million pixels thanks to the 4000 x 3000 resolution. In addition to this the phone also uses a superb Exmor R CMOS sensor to help give all images a natural depth that would not normally be possible from a mobile device. The usual features such as an LED flash and autofocus are all present but the phone also boasts a more unusual feature in the form of 3D Panorama. This enables users to take a photograph of their 360 degree surroundings rather than a snapshot of a set area. This may be particularly useful at events such as music concerts and sporting occasions. The Samsung Galaxy S2 also includes a good camera although it does not match the overall quality offered by the Sony. Images are captured at a resolution of 8 million pixels and a number of excellent features such as face detection and image stabilisation help users to achieve the ultimate picture quality. Both models are capable of recording video footage at 1080P resolution which means users can enjoy High Definition quality on all recordings. Both models also accommodate a secondary camera for video calling that can also be used for self portraits. The Sony offers 2 mega pixel images from this camera while the Samsung records at 1.3 mega pixel resolution.

You will really struggle to find two more stylish handsets than the Sony Xperia S and the Samsung Galaxy S2. The Sony model boasts the more striking looks thanks to its angular finish and unusual transparent band that is located beneath the screen. This band incorporates some LED lights so that it illuminates in certain situations. The model measures 128 x 64 x 10.6mm and weighs just 144 grammes. The screen occupies almost the entire front panel which leaves a minimal bezel that surrounds it which gives the model a premium appearance. Measuring 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5mm and weighing just 116 grammes the Samsung Galaxy S2 is the smaller and lighter of the two models. The handset is constructed from lightweight plastics which is why the model weighs as little as it does. The design of the phone is very different from the Sony with corners being nicely rounded rather than pointed like the Xperia S. Although this design is certainly attractive it does not grab your attention as much as the Sony which is arguably one of the nicest designs we have witnessed in the last six months.

Since the beginning of 2011 we have seen some superb mobile devices released and the Sony Xperia S and the Samsung Galaxy S2 are two of the best we have seen. Despite both offering excellent features the new Sony outshines its rival for both camera features and design.
