Market Press Release – January 14, 2012 3:35 pm – For the past decade Finnish mobile phone Manufacturer Nokia have enjoyed being the leading brand in this increasingly competitive market. A huge range of handsets meant that consumers had a massive selection to choose from and the Symbian operating system that was used by many of their phones was the leading platform for many years. Times change however and the rapid growth of platforms such as Android and iOS together with newer manufacturers producing more powerful phones means that Nokias time at the top could soon come to an end. The one brand that looks likely to claim the top spot is Samsung, the company responsible for superb handsets such as the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy Nexus.
Samsung have been enjoying great success recently and sales for 2011 exceeded the very high levels that they achieved in 2010. At present the company are the leading smartphone manufacturer and shipped over 300 millon units last year. In terms of the overall number of models sold however the company still remains slightly behind Nokia. Although Samsung themselves are confident of overtaking their rivals it seems that some industry experts are not so sure. Analysts from Gartners feel that Samsung will struggle to sell more devices in more emerging markets that have not yet seen the smartphone boom that many markets such as the UK and the US have already experienced. News agency Reuters predicts that Samsung will manage to sell over 359 million handsets this year thanks to a strong product portfolio that includes models like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Nokia however are still expected to sell over 388 million units which will keep them on top but this lead may not last for much longer. As the emerging markets where Nokia dominate continue to develop consumers are likely to switch to more powerful smartphones which is where Samsung specialise.

If Samsung are going to have a successful 2012 then their range of handsets is vital and luckily the company offer some of the very best devices currently available. The Samsung Galaxy S2 was the best selling phone of 2011 and with the S3 not set to be available until later this year the model should continue to sell in great numbers.
