It was only a matter of time before this technology found its way onto mobile phones, and LG are showcasing this on the recently released LG Optimus 3D. This article will focus on the 3D elements of the phone, and what you can expect from the phone during day to day use.
Screen
Measuring up at a huge 4.3 inches, users certainly won’t be disappointed with the size of the screen. Within the dimensions of the screen, a resolution of 480x 800 ensures top notch display quality, backed up with the ability to display a whopping 16 million individual colours. In order to create the 3D effect, LG has utilised some very clever technology. The screen essentially has two layers, each projecting the same image but at different depths. This “tricks” the users’ eyes in to thinking that it is in fact a 3D image on the screen. So how does this technology apply to daily use? For starters, you are able to view images and videos in 3D. Alongside this, the LG 3D user interface offers an interactive and engaging experience, which is a world away from the standard smartphone user interface. As well as the 3D technology, the screen on the LG Optimus 3D also comes with specifications you would expect to find on any other smartphone; accelerometer sensor, proximity sensor, gyro sensor, and the standard Android shortcut keys.
Camera
Obviously, a 3D smartphone wouldn’t be very effective without a camera with the 3D technology built in. The Camera on the LG Optimus 2X has the ability to both take 3D images as well as shoot video footage in 3D. The camera itself uses what is known as “stereoscopic” technology. This works in very much the same way as the screen; it focuses on 2 points at different distances. When these are displayed simultaneously, the users’ eyes perceive it as a single 3D image. The camera operates at 5 megapixels, so you can expect superb quality images. When filming video footage, the LG Optimus 3D can capture 3D in 720p high definition. Should users wish to shoot standard 2D video, they can enjoy full 1080p video capture.
Other Notable Features
Aside from its abilities as a 3D smartphone, the LG Optimus 3D has a number of specifications which the majority of its competition does not. For example, the handset boasts a dual-core processor. This offers outstanding performance, and this technology is only found on a small number of smartphones at the time of writing. In fact, the LG Optimus 2X was the first smartphone ever to incorporate a dual-core processor. Version 2.2 of the increasingly popular Android OS offers users a versatile smartphone experience and allows additional apps to be downloaded from the Android Market. This is upgradeable to version 2.3. Super fast Wi-Fi and 3G internet browsing is also offered by the device, along with a number of impressive multimedia functions. Several media formats are supported by the phone, and there is a generous 8GB of internal storage at the users’ disposal (along with microSD slot which can accommodate a card of up to 32GB), and an HDMI port which allows users to connect the phone to a compatible TV.
