Market Press Release – January 16, 2012 1:22 pm – The new Blackberry Curve 9380 is destined to be a huge success with consumers for several reasons. The phone is the first Curve device from RIM to feature a full touchscreen and the fact that it has access to the excellent Blackberry Messenger service means that it will immediately appeal to thousands of youngsters who want to chat with their friends using this platform. Perhaps the most important factor however is the competitive price that the phone is available for. We see how the phone compares with another popular device that represents great value for money, the HTC Desire S.

Although Blackberry are quite rightly very proud of their first Curve device with a touchscreen unfortunately the phone does not offer the same quality as the Desire S in this area. HTC have always produced super touchscreen displays and the one used in the Desire S is no exception. The 3.7 inch screen makes great use of S-LCD technology to produce an image that combines vivid pictures with excellent viewing angles. In terms of resolution the model displays 480 x 800 pixels which is in line with many other mid range devices currently available. This resolution combined with the relatively small screen size means that the HTC offers a quite respectable pixel density of 252 pixels per inch. The Blackberry Curve 9380 makes use of a smaller 3.2 inch display which uses TFT technology. This type of screen does not offer viewing angles as good as S-LCD but still produces a good quality of image. Not only is the screen smaller than the HTC but the 360 x 480 resolution is also lower which results in a pixel density of 188PPI. One advantage that the Blackberry does have is that it also incorporates an optical trackpad which is located beneath the screen. This is perfect for when the touchscreen does not give you the level of precision that you require and it is great for tasks such as editing text documents and messages.

If you are looking for a device to store multi media files then both of these handsets are well equipped. A micro SD card slot is present on both models meaning that they can accept storage cards with a capacity of up to 32GB. The Blackberry Curve 9380 offers a relatively small internal storage capacity of 512MB but the Desire S offers double this space at with 1GB. There is also very little difference in the RAM memory boasted by both handsets. This type of memory can effect how quickly the phone operates and also helps the model handle future software and applications that it may need to run. The Curve sports 512MB of RAM with the HTC offering a slightly larger 768MB. Another key factor for the performance of your phone is the processor chip that it uses and once again the Desire S offers slightly more than the Blackberry in this department. The 1Ghz chip used by the Desire S means that the model runs at a very fast pace for both single tasks and multi tasking. Although the Blackberry uses a smaller 800Mhz processor the new Blackberry 7.0 operating system offers very efficient power management which means that there is no difference between these devices in terms of operation speed.

If you are looking for smartphone functionality and great value for money then these are two handsets that you should not ignore. Although the HTC Desire S offers the slightly better specification the Blackberry Curve 9380 has the advantage of services such as Blackberry Messenger and more eye catching styling.
