In this article I will provide an overview of the AppStore, and take a look at a couple of bestselling apps from different categories.
As the slogan goes, “There’s and App for that”, and for the most part, it is true. Obviously this is not to be taken literally, but whatever you could possibly need an app for, chances are it has already been developed and it is available for download from the AppStore. Many apps are free, while premium apps range in price from £0.59, to several hundred pounds. Both entertainment apps as well as those aimed at productivity in the workplace are available, as well as everything in between.
A good example of a gaming app is the best selling Angry Birds. This has proven to be phenomenally popular, and has recently received its 500 millionth download, which I’m sure you will agree is an incredible figure. The game involves catapulting birds in order to knock down structures in order to kill enemies, and is operated by using the touchscreen to adjust the angle and power of the catapult. It is a perfect example of how apps integrate with the hardware, making it easy to use and intuitive but at the same time an entertaining experience.
Whilst games are a very popular aspect of the AppStore, it is equally as useful for those seeking productivity apps. There are many on offer, ranging from organisers and document editors, so the iPhone 4 is equally at home as a productivity companion in the office. Other notable categories which highlight the versatility of the device include health and fitness, music, travel and education apps. Thanks to the wide ranging integration which Apple has worked hard to achieve, all these apps are compatible with iPhones, iPads and iPods, and thanks to the new iCloud service, apps can be downloaded once and then accessed through any of your touchscreen Apple devices.

There are currently over 500,000 apps available in the AppStore and this number is growing every day. There is however, competition in this new market, with its main competitor coming from Android Market. This is making headlines in technology circles, with an announcement that the 10 billionth app has recently been downloaded from Android Market. This surpasses the number of downloads from the AppStore, but one must remember that Android is a multi-brand platform; many manufacturers use Android, ranging from HTC and Samsung to Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Many Apple fans argue that the quality of the apps on offer is higher in the AppStore.
Whatever your opinion or preference, I’m sure you will agree that the numbers (in terms of available apps and downloads) are staggering. We must also remember that the whole concept of downloadable apps is only a few years old, so we can surely look forward to more innovations in the near future. Apps are a massive part of the appeal of smartphones for many users, and the iPhone 4 is a great example of the innovation and convenience they provide.
