There have been some massive smartphone releases this year from some of the major players in the phone world such as Sony, HTC and Samsung. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the latest after recently being unveiled under a glare of publicity at a high profile event in London. One lesser known manufacturer has also launched a new handset that they hope will compete with the S3 and the other big names. The Ascend D Quad from Huawei offers some great specification and features so we see how it compares with the new S3 in terms of design and display quality.
The new Samsung Galaxy S3 has followed the current trend for a more curved design in contrast to the much more angular design that was featured on its predecessor the S2. Some users will like this more rounded design but many people have commented that it actually looks more old fashioned than the older model. The handset measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm and weighs just 133 grammes. The depth measurement is particularly impressive considering that a large 4.8 inch display is used on the phone. The main body of the phone is made from plastics which help keep the weight down to a minimum but also make the phone feel less premium than some of its rivals. The new Huawei Ascend D Quad also offers a slightly rounded design but not as much as the Samsung which leaves a nice rectangular design which looks very modern. If we were to pick a current handset that looks similar to this model is would actually be the Galaxy S2, the device which upstages the S3 in this area. The model measures 129 x 64 x 8.9mm which is very compact and it also weighs slightly less than the Samsung at just 130 grammes. The model is also constructed from high quality plastics rather than the metal materials that can be found on recent efforts from Sony and HTC. Although neither of these devices are our favourite for design and build quality we do feel that the Huawei device blends a nicer design in a more compact and lightweight chassis.

Although we favour the design of the Huawei Ascend D Quad things seem a little more evenly matched when it comes to screen technology. The Ascend incorporates 4.5 inch display which is slightly smaller than the S3 but also larger than the majority of smartphones currently available. The screen uses IPS LCD technology which creates a great range of colours and also a very bright display. In terms of resolution the Ascend D Quad offers 1280 x 720 pixels. This means that the model can display a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, a level very similar to the impressive iPhone 4S. The Samsung Galaxy S3 actually produces the same resolution as the Huawei device but because it features a larger 4.8 inch display the pixel density drops to 306PPI. This is still a very high standard that outshines what many current models can offer. The Samsung screen uses Super AMOLED technology which is widely regarded as the leading display technology available. This type of screen is very power efficient and also boasts superb viewing angles.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is one of the high profile smartphone releases of 2012 but the lesser known Huawei Ascend D Quad gives the phone a run for its money. Both devices are very similar in terms of screen quality but the Ascend holds the upper hand for styling and build quality.
