United Airlines is finalizing a deal with Boeing for a minimum of 100 narrow-bodied 737’s, used for short and medium range routes, in a deal worth $10 billion according to the aircraft’s list price. A source told SMO Fitzgerald Global that United will be receiving a significant discount on the order.

The majority of the 737s will be of the new upgraded 737 MAX variety, which provides airlines with a more fuel efficient and economical solution in an environment of prohibitive fuel prices and increased competition.

The source also told SMO Fitzgerald Global that the deal contains options for United which could see the deal rise to include as many as 200 jets in total. Some of the jets that will make up the order will be the older model 737 Next Generation versions, although agreement has yet to be made on the exact numbers of each type of 737. Due to the continuing private negotiations, the source has declined to be identified.

United have been in negotiations to update its fleet for over a year, receiving bids from both Airbus and Boeing, with many analysts expecting the firm orders total being closer to 200 and that the orders could have been shared between the world’s two largest commercial jet manufacturers.

Boeing, which hopes to overtake Airbus in orders this year, has taken more than 1,000 orders and provisional orders for the MAX. Airbus had taken 1,289 firm orders and 266 provisional orders for the neo as at the end of March.

Norwegian Air Shuttle has announced an order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX airliners, along with 22 Boeing 737-800 and 100 Airbus A320neo aircraft. This is the first European order for the 737 MAX and the entire order is valued at $11.4 billion.

Boeing’s 737 MAX and Airbus’ A320neo are direct rivals and have had a focus on fuel efficiency throughout their development. Both manufacturers claim that their plane will provide carriers with double digit fuel savings.

Boeing unveiled a new wingtip device that gives operators of the MAX fuel savings of 1.5 percent on top of the 10-12 percent savings the company says it can deliver by putting new engines in the 737.

Last month, Boeing unveiled several design choices meant to lower weight and wind-resistance for the MAX. The plane-maker said it had decided on an 8-inch nose gear extension to give ground clearance for a larger engine fan.

The Boeing 737 MAX will not see service before 2017, whereas SMO Fitzgerald Global expects Airbus to begin delivering the A320neo in 2015, giving Airbus a significant advantage with those airlines eager to cut their fuel bills.
