Market Press Release – January 4, 2011 9:54 am – The RITE (‘Reducing the Impact of Textiles on the Environment’) Group, formed in 2007, and is essentially a platform for sharing ideas and innovations in relation to sustainable textiles. When it started, the major debate at the time was sustainable cotton production and the organic movement, however the founders of the RITE Group recognized the need for a broader approach to address all aspects of textile production, use and disposal.

The event, sponsored by Tesco, showcased some recent technological innovations in sustainable textiles production (http://www.softlines.sgs.com/products.htm), touched on the likely future of fashion in relation to sustainability, and debated issues such as cost versus sustainability. The theme of the event was ‘Shaping tomorrow’s industry’ and Forum for the Future set the scene by quoting research on factors that will impact consumer behaviour going forward. According to the research, the three most important of these factors were said to be “climate change, population growth and resource shortages”. More specific presentations include the outdoor and surfwear brand Finisterre who spoke about new developments this small UK brand has been making in terms of sustainable raw material sourcing. Huntsman Textile Effects provided a point of view from a chemicals (dye) manufacturer. Five breakout sessions also took place to allow more detailed discussion on the issues, one of which covered Textile fibres: nature, science or hybrid? The group discussed the benefits and disadvantages associated with natural fibres, synthetics, and the new wave of regenerated natural fibres such as Lenzing Tencel and Modal.
