Market Press Release – February 15, 2011 6:26 am – One of the most frequent problems a pianist faces is excessive eye-strain. If you do not have the proper type and amount of light, you will be putting a heavy load on your eyes, making them work harder than they need to. Studies show that eye-strain occurs in 50 to 90 percent of pianists and musicians in general. When you stress out your eyes, you open yourself up to a number of maladies such as headaches, anxiety, physical fatigue, and lack of concentration and attentiveness leading to decreased productivity. The one thing you definitely need when practicing or performing at the piano is complete concentration. If you do not have the proper type of lighting, you will have a harder time achieving the level of concentration and intensiveness needed to practice or perform to the best of your ability.
Whether you are a beginning student or an advanced performer, it is very important to create viewing conditions that minimize stress to your eyes. The best way to achieve this is to minimize reflections and glare, eliminate excessively bright light (sunlight or harsh interior lighting), control your surrounding light, and maintain the proper viewing distance. You can easily eliminate exterior sunlight by simply closing drapes or shades on your windows. Interior light that is not being used as direct light for reading music can be minimized by dimming or reducing bulb wattage. After you have created the proper viewing conditions surrounding your piano, you need to focus on obtaining the proper type of piano lamp to shed light directly onto your music. It is important to note that a lamp that is not designed for use on a piano will often times cause more problems for the pianist by producing glare and excessive heat, improper wattage, and non-focused light.
You will have quite a variety of choices when it comes to searching for a lamp specifically designed for use on a piano, as there are lamps that meet the requirements of every piano type, and also offer flexibility in style and price to satisfy the needs of the consumer.
Below you will find a list of the types of piano lamps available. All of the lamps are designed to reduce eye-strain because they offer the proper amount of light and allow the ability to focus the light onto your music or work. Keep in mind that some lamp styles work better on grand pianos, and others work best on upright pianos. There are some styles that work for both grand and upright pianos.
1. Grand Piano Lights – The most popular styles are Clamp lamps (clip-on lamps) that clip securely onto the music holder on a grand piano without scratching the piano. They offer long flexible shades and adjustable stems so that you can obtain the proper position. These lamps are easily transported. They are available in incandescent, fluorescent, or LED lighting technology.
2. LED Piano Lamps – The newest lighting technology is now available with piano lamps. These lamps are extremely energy efficient, no bulbs to replace, non-glare, no chemicals involved, produce very little heat, and the light lasts for years and years without fading or suddenly burning out. There are LED lamp styles that can be used on both grand and upright pianos.
3. Balance arm piano lights (also called Counter Balance) – These lamps can be used on both grand and upright pianos as well. They have a long arm with three adjustment points that can position the shade exactly where you want it, casting the light directly on the music, or on the music and keys. The arm has an attractive weight on the opposite end that serves to balance the lamp and make it resistant to gravity, hence the name, Balance Arm.
4. Piano Floor Lamps – These floor lamps are specifically designed for use with pianos. They have a long adjustable arm that adjusts in height and when placed next to the piano (on either side) the arm and shade reaches over to the top of the music, casting light exactly where you need it the most. These lamps are ideal for those who do not want to place anything on their piano, saving the space on the piano for other items such as a metronome, books, or photos.
5. Desk/Piano Lamps – This style of lamp is normally used on upright/vertical pianos including spinets, consoles, studios, and taller uprights. They have a sturdy solid weighted base that sits on top of the instrument, and either a single or double adjustment arm so you can position the shade directly over the music. These lamps also work great elsewhere around the home or office.
As you can see, there are numerous choices when it comes to purchasing a lamp for your piano. The best way to make the proper choice is to first know your piano type, then look at the options for your specific piano. For example, if you have a grand piano, among your options would be a clamp lamp, a piano floor lamp, or the Balance Arm style. For upright pianos, you need to consider the height of the instrument. If you have a short piano (spinet/console) you would want to choose either a desk/piano lamp, or a balance arm lamp. For taller uprights, you will need a low profile lamp, which has a very short stem so that the shade stays closer to the music.
The next choice you need to make is to decide which type of lighting technology you prefer. The choices are incandescent (typical household lighting), fluorescent, or an LED lamp. And then the final choice would be color and style.
Fortunately the House of Troy Lighting Company has perfected the art of making piano lamps that offer many choices in style and design, while maintaining a dedication to quality craftsmanship and paying close attention to the importance of proper lighting for use on pianos.
Take the important step of reducing eye-strain so that you avoid the problems associated with improper lighting, and allow yourself to perform at the best of your ability.
