Market Press Release – January 5, 2012 10:15 am – Around 50 bespoke rail ticketing kiosks have been deployed in Northern Rail, South West Trains and East Midland Train stations as part of a pilot scheme with Protouch kiosk manufacturers and Parkeon; makers of fare collection systems for transit organisations. Protouch touch screen software has been selected by Parkeon, who supply ticketing machines to the rail networks, to help issue tickets more quickly and efficiently to the millions of customers who pass through UK train stations every year. Ticketing machines have become common on train platforms over the past decade but the latest units offer a cost-effective improvement as they are up to one third of the price of conventional units.
Protouch’s kiosks have been designed to provide maximum functionality from the smallest possible space. This reduced footprint minimises the impact of self service ticketing on the space available to customers and retailers at train stations. When the full rollout of kiosks across the UK is complete, it has been predicted that the units will save the rail networks several million pounds, in addition to providing increased convenience for rail customers.
The installed kiosks feature a recessed touch screen for improved visibility; chip and pin devices for payment; and identification to enable pre-paid ticket collection. There is also a state of the art ticket printer.
