Market Press Release – December 1, 2011 1:58 pm – A new global Search Engine is arriving: Volunia, proposing a different vision of what the search engine of the future could be.
The creator is Massimo Marchiori, the mathematician and computer science professor inventor of HyperSearch (the search algorithm that inspired Pagerank and Google). Marchiori is the winner of the TR100 award given to the 100 bests young innovators in the world, as as research scientist at MIT in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), he has been author of P3P (the world standard for Web Privacy), XQuery (the world standard for XML Query), Metalog (the first Semantic Web system in the world), and OWL (the world standard for Web Reasoning).
The search engine landscape has been still for too much time, without radical innovations in the way we the search the web. Too many search engines have tried to imitate Google, and failed. As a result, and due to the big resources needed just to create even a very simple world-wide search engine, very few global search engines have been proposed so far, and progress in the search engine world hasn't proceeded at the same speed as the rest of the Web.
After a lifetime of experience in the Web, Marchiori decided to start the Volunia project to be able to realize his idea of search engine of the future. Gathered the initial funding by IT entrepreneur Mariano Pireddu, Marchiori went on to collect a team of brilliant developers, hardware equipment by CERN supercomputer supplier E4, and network infrastructure by Tiscali.
The search engine has been under development for three years, keeping all stages of the project at the greatest level of secrecy. The development and internal testing phases are now ended, and Volunia can finally announce its existence to the world, and its plans for launch.
The Volunia search engine is going to start a test period that is invitation only: users from all over the world can register at www.volunia.com and have a chance to be selected. People who are selected will be able to test the search engine in world premiere, provide direct feedback to the Volunia team, have news about the future developments, and invite a limited number of friends. The launch of the test phase is planned by the end of 2011, as soon as a good world-wide distributed sampling of test users is reached.
Volunia is planned to be a truly global search engine: it will be immediately available with an interface localized in 12 languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Arabic, Korean, Chinese and Japanese), and covering web content from all over the world.
