One of the major breakthroughs with this technology is that it enables the charging of the phone via HDMI, something that only used to be possible via USB. The new socket is backwards compatible and has the ability to detect whether there is data that needs to be transferred or audio/video signals. The transfer of video is vitally important should you want to view movie footage on a large screen and the new standard supports both 1080P resolution as well as 8 channel surround sound.
