Market Press Release – December 15, 2011 9:35 am – There are approximately two months left for the biggest state MBA entrance exam for Maharashtra, Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MAH CET). To help you prepare better for the exam, MBAUniverse.com hosted a Live Expert Chat on preparation strategy for MAH CET 2012 on Wednesday, December 14, 2011. The expert for the chat was Gaurav Mashalkar, Rank 1 holder in MAH CET 2011 and a first year student of JBIMS.
Excerpts of the Live Expert Chat:
Q: Sudhanshu: Please suggest the book for tackling English section. Which are the important topics and sections from which questions are asked in MAH CET?
A: Important topics for CET from English perspective are passage section. Also you need to be good in basics like synonyms, fill in the blanks. There is no particular book needed. You need good basic reading comprehension and English vocabulary skills.
Q: Sudhanshu: What are the types of question asked in the Visual Reasoning section? How to prepare for it?
A: There are 30 questions asked from the Visual Reasoning area. Visual patterns, Series of visual images, Mirror image, rotations clockwise and anticlockwise are some basic concepts. You need to identify the pattern. It becomes easy with practice. But yes, visual reasoning is unique to CET and hence you need to specially practice it. RS or Chandresh Agarwal books are good to start with.
Q: Sudhanshu: What is the cut off for MAH CET in order to get a call from JBIMS?
A: Cutoff's are generally above 99.8 percentile for Open. Please check DTE website for other category wise cutoffs.
Q: Urvi Urvashi: How many questions shall we attempt at the paper? What should be the strategy to attempt the paper?
A: Attempt as many as you can. It is a balance of accuracy and speed. So look at at least 175 questions to attempt seriously for a 150+ score. There is no thumb rule for strategy. Solve a few mocks and fine tune what suits you. For me it was Quant first followed by DI then English and finally Visual Reasoning.
Q: Aritra Dasgupta: Is there any negative marking in CET? What should be the preparation strategy for MAH CET in comparison to CAT?
A: No there is no negative marking in CET. If you want to make educated guesses you can. Attempt even those you may not be sure of. Comparing to CAT, MAH CET is of a different kind. It is a game of speed and accuracy. Q: Satish: What is the cut off percentile for CAT and MAH CET for JBIMS?
A: Cutoff's could be around 99.7. CAT marks are equated to CET marks and hence it may change every year. So think on the higher side.
Q: Pratap: Are non Maharashtrian candidates eligible to take MAH CET exam?
A: Please refer to CET prospectus or contact DTE office for confirmation for this year.
Q: Sushant Kumar: Would taking mock tests and solving last years' paper help? Please share your exam taking experience.
A: Mock tests help but at times they can be deceiving. So try to solve different types of papers as well. I mean CET 2010 was easy and then CET 2011 was tougher. So having given both exams I think it would be wise that you be ready for all and hence give mocks but also analyze your scores and strategize.
Q: Sushant Kumar: What should be the Dos & Don'ts which shall be taken care for the exam day, inside the hall?
A: Be calm. That is the golden rule. CET 2011 was a bit tough and to begin with I was a bit tensed. Screwed up one sum and marked the wrong answer. So just be relaxed. Be conscious of time factor. Do not get stuck on a particular problem. Go according to your strategy. Divide time accordingly. Be sure and make a mental check of how may you have solved accurately and how many you have guessed.
Q: Sudhanshu: What is your take on MAH CET and why choose JBIMS over IIMs?
A: JBIMS is one of the best B-schools in the country when it comes to faculty, alumni and also the fact that it is situated in Mumbai makes it a lot better for off summer project activities. Also JBIMS has an excellent history and record and is called the CEO factory.
