Market Press Release – July 29, 2010 11:11 am – Packt is pleased to announce BIRT 2.6 Data Analysis and Reporting, a new book that helps Java developers with the creation of reports using BIRT. Written by John Ward, this book helps Java developers and people with the basic knowledge of SQL create, manage fine and rich reports using BIRT.

BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) is an Eclipse-based open source reporting system for web applications, especially those based on Java and J2EE. BIRT has two main components: a report designer based on Eclipse, and a run-time component that you can add to your app server. BIRT also offers a charting engine that allows users to add charts to their own application. BIRT reports consist of four main parts: - data, data transforms, business logic and presentation.

BIRT 2.6 Data Analysis and Reporting helps Java developers create structured reports as well as add visual report elements. They can deploy BIRT reports with the BIRT Viewer and Report Engine API. Additionally users can also learn to update screenshots and scripting debuggers and work with data from JDBC, XML, flat files, and web services. This book not only helps in learning to script in BIRT in order to add business logic, but also helps manipulate report elements and handle events.

This book begins by introducing the concepts of business intelligence, open source software, and different installation methods that can be used to design BIRT reports such as the Palette and Grid components. Towards the end of the book, readers will be able to enhance the presentation of their report using Charts, Hyperlinks, and Drill Through. The book includes a case study at the end along with a real-world example that runs throughout the book.

Java developers who wish to start making reports easily and quickly, and also want to be up-to-date with the latest developments in BIRT will find this book a useful and beneficial read. The book is out now and available from Packt.
