Market Press Release – February 6, 2012 6:35 pm – Sydney, Australia (December 10, 2011) – Eminent osteopath Dr. Tony Tranfield, Director, Beaches Osteopathic Centre, introduces a groundbreaking, technologically advanced screening and rehabilitation program for postural instability and balance problems.

Dr Tranfield uses technology called Computerised Dynamic Posturography (CDP) to accurately measure a person’s stability. The test involves standing on a plate under different postural conditions and is quick, safe, non invasive and very accurate.

According to Dr. Tranfield over 50% of people taking the test are failing it, meaning that they are at risk of having a fall without knowing it. His equipment is research grade, and the tests are research validated.

Because the test is very quick it can be repeated multiple times through the course of treatment thus enabling Dr Tranfield to test and measure the effectiveness of his therapies.

The test also enables Dr Tranfield to screen for more serious balance conditions which may need further investigation.

The majority of balance problems however are benign and respond well to his rehabilitation programs.

His CDP equipment enables him to tailor specific programs and monitor their effectiveness throughout a course of treatment.

Falls are a major source of injury and fatality in advanced age; and without testing most people are unaware that they have a balance problem.

In order to address this, the American Geriatrics Society in conjunction with the British Geriatrics Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons produced the ‘Guideline for the Prevention of Falls in Older Persons (AGS 2001)’.

The guide recommended that all physicians routinely assess all older persons for the risk of a fall and institute gait and balance therapy.

Dr Tranfield has developed a rehabilitation program for balance and coordination which involves light exercises, visual, auditory and physical therapy.

His programs are suitable for all ages and conditions and Dr Tranfield designs his programs specifically for the individual, and measures progress using Computerized Dynamic Posturography.

His programs have been helpful for people with balance disturbance, movement disorders or those recovering from a stroke.

His programs also help children with developmental concerns including balance, coordination, attention and concentration. They are also used by performance athletes, dancers and gymnasts.

Individuals wishing to be tested receive a written report including their risk of having a fall. They are also able to view their specific postural characteristics on screen and receive a verbal interpretation and recommendations.

Dr. Tranfield recommends an annual balance test for anyone over fifty.

Dr Tranfield is the director of Beaches Osteopathic Centre, located in Narrabeen, NSW on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

His qualifications are D.O. (Osteopath), D.A.C.N.B. (Diplomat of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board). He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Functional Neurology, a Fellow of the American College of Functional Neurology and a member of the Australian Osteopathic Association.
