There is no denying the fact that the jewelry industry has evolved to such an extent that the diamonds they create synthetically in the lab are identical to real mined diamonds. It is almost impossible for a layman and sometimes even for a jeweler to identify lab grown diamonds from a heap of real diamonds. Where on one hand this achievement is commendable, on the other hand it poses a threat; the threat of being cheated. There are jewelers who sell synthetic diamonds at the price of real ones and it is the responsibility of the buyer to stay away from such jewelers. While we cannot tell who a legitimate jeweler is but definitely we can list the properties of synthetic diamonds that would help buyers in taking the right decision.

Properties of Lab Created Diamonds

1. Crystallinity – When we consider this property, there are two possibilities – a continuous single crystal or combination of multiple crystals. Diamonds with a single and large crystal are considered more suitable for making jewelry and generally are costly.

2. Hardness – It is a universal fact that diamond is the hardest material known on Earth. This property of hardness is there in synthetic diamonds as well. Jewelry makers set the properties in such a way that the hardness of lab grown diamonds is comparable with real mined diamonds.

3. Thermal Conductivity – The thermal conductivity of synthetic diamonds is not as high as mined diamonds and this property is generally used for differentiating between synthetic and real diamonds. In fact, most of the jewelers use this method for finding out whether a given diamond is real or just an imitation.

4. Impurities – Every buyer desires to own a diamond that is free from flaws and impurities. But, the flaws and impurities cannot be eliminated completely. In fact, it is a key characteristic of a real diamond. In case of lab created diamonds, jewelers include impurities intentionally so that it looks more like a real diamond.

After reading all these properties, you must have got an idea about the differences between real and synthetic diamonds. However, this set of information is not exhaustive and you may have to search for little more before purchasing any type of diamond. Apart from reading about properties, search for some helpful guides that focus on how to find reliable and trustworthy diamond sellers. Buying a diamond is an expensive affair and should be handled with utmost care.
