Researchers have learned that the specific local anesthetic called Lidocaine decreases the number of postoperative lower face and neck lift complications when it is used with a medically induced swelling (tumescence) of affected skin. These results, and patient tolerance plus satisfaction rates, were observed in 250 patients surveyed over three years. The patients experienced less clotting of the blood below their skin (hematomas). They also did not suffer facial nerve injuries nor injuries to the greater auricular nerve in the ear. Not one patient in the survey suffered significant wound healing problems. None of them experienced the shedding of dead skin, called skin slough by medical professionals. The few incidents of post-operative high blood pressure were easily overcome as patients recognized their surroundings and overcame their fear of the medical environment. Interestingly, not one patient in the study expressed regret for their choice of local anesthesia for the procedure.
The findings prove that face- and neck-lifting procedures have become quite safe and easily achievable under local anesthesia. Patients don't need to be put to sleep and do not fear possible complications as they once did. There is little to no risk of postoperative nausea or vomiting, increased blood pressure or venous thrombosis (the development of clots in leg veins) from the use of local anesthesia with surgically induced tumescence. That facial plumping technique, and the local anesthesia, allows surgeons to perform their work safely without causing future problems for the patient.
