May 28, 2012 Acedrugstore.com (USA): A study carried out on asthma patients, half of whom also suffered from mild lung infection have been found to improve their breathing complication on treatment with Clarithromycin medication. Many investigations have been carried out to assess the link between bacterial infection and its role in causing delirious lung complication that ultimately results in asthma.
The investigators tested around 55 individuals suffering from asthma for the occurrence of pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma and Chlamydia, both of which result in serious health complications in asthmatics and found that nearly half of the group actually had these symptoms.
Dr. Monica Kraft, lead researcher of this study said that previous studies carried in this field of research found only 10% of people suffering from the serious bacterial infections of the lungs. The study was continued for six weeks where some people were randomly assigned the antibiotic medication-Clarithromycin and the others were given a placebo drug. Individuals who were suffering from asthma but didn’t have any lung infection were also given a placebo, with the aim of obtaining better statistical results.
The results showed that asthmatic individuals with bacterial infection reported an easy feel of their congestion along with a significant rise in the rate of expelled air (a measure which is most commonly used to assess the proper functioning of the lungs). While, those with or without bacterial infection but were on placebo medication, didn’t show to have any changes in their condition.
She also said that the research will prove to be of great aid for all those individuals who suffer from asthma and in turn also get acquired with the debilitating lung inflammation. This is really a very significant implication in medical science for all those asthmatics to ease their lung congestion and also remove the detrimental bacteria from the roots.
