There are less than two months left for CAT 2012 and the countdown has started. It is high time that you have completed the first round of preparation and finalize your strategy. To give you the right tips and guidance on two months preparation strategy for CAT 2012, MBAUniverse.com hosted Live Expert Chat on Thursday, August 16, 2012. The expert who answered the queries was Rahul Reddy, Director, VistaMind Education.
Excerpts from the Live Expert Chat:
Q: Chirag Jain: What should be my strategy for cat 2012 for next two months?
A: It depends on how prepared you already are. You must already be giving some Mock CATs. Target small improvements every Mock. In Section 1 you should target accuracy of 80 per cent. In case you have 80 per cent accuracy then focus on increasing attempts by two to three questions every mock. Similarly in section 2, target accuracy of 70 per cent and then increase attempts.
Q: Madhuja Chatterjee: As CAT 2012 will be held for a window of 21 days, will the question paper standard vary from day to day? On which portions do we need to give more weightage in Quantitative Ability?
A: The questions will have some variation in difficulty level though not very much. Also it is not true that later day papers are tougher than earlier papers. Unfortunately for QA all chapters are quite important. On a particular day even a Logarthimn chapter can have three questions or 10 per cent of section one. However, traditionally Numbers, Geometry, P&C are important chapters.
Q: Manju Yadav: How should I prepare for CAT if I want to study in the top B-School in India?
A: Top 15 B-schools in India would require 98 percentile in CAT or XAT and good performance in the GD, PI and WAT process. So first test yourself in a good mock CAT series and find out where you stand. Then aim to get into top two per cent.
Q: Raman: How to tackle the geometry part for Quant? How many questions will come in CAT in general?
A: We can’t predict how many questions come from Geometry. The questions will be different in each day and each slot. Hence it depends on your luck. Geometry is not that difficult. I suggest that you focus only on geometry for a week. On Day 1, go through theorems on Triangles. On Day 2 and Day 3, solve all Geometry questions from study material first and then past CAT and XAT papers. Study the theorems on circles and polygons on Day 4. On Day 5, 6 and 7, solve all problems from circles and polygons.
Q: Mona: How many hours shall I allocate in a day for CAT 2012 preparation?
A: It Depends on how prepared you are as of now. But three to five hours a day should be sufficient.
Q: Anuj: What is the strategy for LR and DI section as I am focusing on solving puzzles from Shakuntala Devi and also George Summers what to do for improving my reasoning skills?
A: As far as CAT is concerned, DI now comes with QA and LR with VA. Summers is good. Also solve past CAT papers.
Q: Anuj: Please suggest some strategies or quick tips to enjoy the process of reading for CAT?
A: Hi I will give the secret. In CAT, people waste too much time trying to read the passage extra carefully. The first reading should be two to three minutes and you should aim at getting an overall idea and key points. Then for every question you can come back to the passage. Spend up to 2 minutes per question. Similarly, while reading, try to read at about 150 to 250 words per minute and write a key point summary at the end. You can also identify different words, guess the meaning and then check for some subjects. Start from Wikipedia. Get a basic idea and then read passages and articles.
Q: Harish Naman: How many questions should I attempt in each section?
A: There is no specific target for Section 1. It depends on different level range from 18 to 26 if you are aiming for IIMs. In Section 2, 22 to 26 questions with 70 per cent accuracy would be good enough.
