It’ll be the 100th anniversary of the Australian Open live ( http://www.australian-open-live.com ) and it promises to be a very special fortnight at Melbourne Park. The Aussie public love their tennis and they pack the event out each year, braving the often balmy temperatures which regularly soar to nearly 40C on court !
To sum up why the Australian Open is so special you just have to point to the night session matches on Rod Laver Arena. Over the years we’ve seen some unparalleled late-night drama with the twists and turns keeping fans worldwide on the edge of their seats into the small hours of the morning. And then there’s the surprise finalists. With the event being held right at the start of the calendar year, some of the leading stars often turn up a little undercooked, opening the door for previously unheralded players to steal the show. Just remember Marcos Baghdatis in 2006 and most recently Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008 with both men going on to reach the top ten.
However in 2012 all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic. The charismatic Serb was almost superhuman in 2011 and he’s set himself impossibly high standards. Djokovic will be gunning for a hat-trick of Australian Open titles but he’ll have tough competition from the likes of Roger Federer and Tsonga, looking to prove their end of season form was no fluke, as well as two-time runner-up Andy Murray.
The WTA Tour saw a series of first time champions anointed in 2011 and it will be fascinating to see if any of them emerge to become a real household name. Petra Kvitova is a force to be reckoned with on her day and the Czech will have her eyes firmly set on that world number one spot but Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams are now back and you don’t get tougher competitors than those two.
