Although new handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the forthcoming iPhone 5 grab the majority of media attention there are some excellent alternative premium smartphones currently available. The HTC One X has attracted some super reviews since it was launched and the Sony Xperia S is also a very impressive handset. There is one problem with this Sony model however and that is that it does not boast the latest version of the Android operating system but this looks set to change over the coming weeks.

The Sony Xperia S is the flagship model in the companies current range of mobile devices so it seems strange that they opted to launch the model with the Gingerbread version of the Android platform installed. The new Ice Cream Sandwich, or ICS, version of the software has been available since January and the majority of premium Android devices come supplied with this version. When the Xperia S was first launched Sony promised that there would be an ICS update made available for the phone but they would not give exact details of when we could expect to see it. It has now been revealed that the update for the phone will be rolled out towards the end of May and into the beginning of June. Although Sony have not officially announced this a number of Sony Support staff commented on their website forum that this is when we can expect to see the new software launched.
