Market Press Release – December 3, 2011 11:24 am – The new Samsung Galaxy Note combines a high quality large screen with a powerful processor to give you the ultimate multi media smartphone. The phone features a number of great applications already installed so we take a quick look at some of the more impressive ones. We also check out the battery life on this model and see if all of the powerful technology has a negative effect on performance times.

Thanks to the rise in popularity of many social networking sites we now see many mobile devices offering applications that make using these services a more simple affair. HTC offer the excellent Friendstream facility whilst Sony Ericsson include the equally impressive Timescape UI on their models. The Samsung Galaxy Note uses a feature called Social Hub which aims to present you with a host of information all in one place. The service currently links to three sites which are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn but there are more due to be added in the coming months. The device combines status updates and Tweets from these services and combines them with e mails and SMS message on a single application. This gives you a simple overview of a host of information that is relevant to you. The Social Hub supports over 8000 different e mail services and enables you to link multiple accounts of your own. When you access the Social Hub you are presented with two options, the first enables you to view messages from your friends. This is where you can read e mails and text messages together rather than having to log into a separate applications to perform either task. The second page is where you can view a timeline which combines updates from the internet sites we mentioned earlier. The Social Hub is very easy to use and is a hugely appealing aspect of this excellent new model.

As you would expect the large 5.3 inch display and the lightning fast processor do have a negative effect on the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy Note. The handset uses a large capacity 2500mAh battery that is severely tested by the models high specification. Officially you can expect approximately 13.5 hours of talk time from this model when connected to a 3G network and around 820 hours of standby time. We prefer to take a look at the actual time achieved with normal usage as very few people use their phone to simply conduct calls. When you start to take into consideration other tasks such as web browsing, audio playback and gaming these can have a huge effect on the battery expectancy. When we tested the Note over an average day we managed to squeeze about 12 hours of performance from the battery which is slightly disappointing. Nobody expects the modern smartphone to last days between charges but we were hoping for around 24 hours which is the sort of figure offered by the best selling iPhone 4S. Having said that we can forgive the Galaxy Note a little as no other model offers a screen quite as great or performance that is on the same level.

The Social Hub application is the most impressive feature on the new Samsung Galaxy Note and will appeal to social networking fans everywhere. Despite the relatively poor battery life the handset will still strike a chord with consumers thanks to its excellent large screen.
