Market Press Release – January 30, 2012 6:08 pm – If you own a smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy S2 or HTC Sensation, you will no doubt be impressed with the tasks they are capable of performing. One of the benefits of owning a smartphone is that you can use it to replace an MP3 player, and store and listen to your music collection using just your phone.
Smartphones make ideal music devices, but they are also capable of performing some tasks that an MP3 player never could. In this article I will look at the SoundHound app which is available for free from Android Market.
What Is SoundHound?
It is an app which allows users to identify songs of which they do not now the title or artist. It uses a database of millions of songs which intelligently recognises a song and will then search this database for a match.
How Do You SoundHound?
Using SoundHound could not be easier. When the app is opened, the interface is very simple. There is a large SoundHound logo in the middle of the screen. Simply hold your phone near the source of the music, be it a speaker, computer or television, and tap the icon. The app will then activate and search for a match within the database. Because Android smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation are able to connect to the internet in nearly any location, the app will search the online database and present the results within a few seconds.

Is It Accurate?
In a word, Yes! When writing this article, I tested the app using my HTC Sensation, on 10 random songs from various genres using the speakers on a laptop. Of these 10 songs, 9 were successful, so there is every chance that it will recognise most songs provided the sound from the speakers is clear enough.
SoundHound may not be capable of recognising every song, but to get an idea of how large it’s database is, there is an interesting comment about it on Android Market, where a user states that it is even able to recognise songs in Japanese! Although this is by no means an essential app, it is worth a download as it is free of charge, and I’m sure most people have been in a situation where they have heard a song which they liked but did not know the title or artist. If you are the proud owner of an Android smartphone like the HTC Sensation or Samsung Galaxy S2, this is a useful addition to your app collection.
