Market Press Release – February 6, 2011 4:59 am – With a growing economy and a mining boom, the floods and recent storms in Queensland, Australia, the demand for labour has increased. Immigration to Australia of skilled migration to Australia is seen as the solution to the labour shortages following the flooding disasters.
The Australian Prime Minister, Gillard had originally campaigned on a promise to reduce immigration.
AUSTRALIA\'S flooding disaster may spark flood-proofing infrastructure investment of record proportions and force the country to rethink its immigration policy.
The economic damage is estimated at about $10 billion. There was already a skills shortage in Queensland, Australia to due to the demands of the booming mining industry.
Migration of thousands of overseas workers and the imminent retirement of waves of baby boomers, all flies in the face of growing calls for migration caps.
The lack of skills has already led to an admission from the mining sector some coal mines could be forced to close because of a lack of highly qualified safety officers who must be on site at all hours of operation.
Business expects more than 4.4 million workers will be needed nationally over the next 15 years simply to replace retiring baby boomers, while another 4.8 million workers will be needed to deal with growth and this was before the effects of the recent disasters that have hit Queensland.
Huge amounts of money are being thrown at the problem, with a government-industry advisory body, Skills Queensland, getting a $100 million investment fund to find a solution.
A KPMG survey said Queensland could expect to be among the hardest hit by the ageing workforce in the next five years, with about a quarter of the state\'s companies predicting a significant impact.
