Market Press Release – January 18, 2012 4:32 pm – In this article I will provide an overview and comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy R. On the surface, much seems the same about these phones, but there are a few more differences than you think.
Appearance wise, the two are nearly identical, sharing the same shape and colour scheme. They both have the same Android shortcut keys at the base of the screen. The handsets are the same size give or take a fraction of a millimetre, although the Galaxy S2 has a slightly larger screen. This is achieved by having less spec bordering the screen between the screen and the edge of the handset. the screen on both models has the same resolution of 480x 800, but the screen technology is different. The Samsung Galaxy R uses a SC-LCD capacitive touchscreem whereas that on the Galaxy S2 is a Super AMOLED screen, which offers better colour saturation, viewing angles and improved battery life.

The camera is another area where the two handsets differ greatly. The Galaxy S2 is the better of the two as a camera phone, thanks to an 8 megapixel camera which comes with many features such as autofocus, face & smile detection, image stabilisation and LED flash. The Galaxy R has a slightly less powerful 5 megapixel unit, and although it includes a few of the image enhancing features found on the S2, it lacks the face detection, touch focus and image stabilisation applications. When it comes to shooting video, the Galaxy S2 naturally outdoes the Galaxy R, with 1080p full HD compared to the 720p achieved by the latter.
Processing power is another area where the Galaxy S2 offers slightly more than the Galaxy R. The Galaxy R has a 1 GHz dual-core processor, whereas the Galaxy S2 has a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. Unless you are a smartphone enthusiast, you are unlikely to notice the difference between the two in terms of performance. The Galaxy R has ample processing power to provide great performance when multitasking and carrying out everyday tasks.
Apart from what I have listed above, there are not that many more differences between the two handsets. Both have the latest “Gingerbread” version of the popular Android operating system, allowing users to browse hundreds of thousands of apps from the Android Market.
Unless you are a smartphone enthusiast, you are unlikely to be swayed by the slightly better specifications of the Galaxy S2, as you will invariably pay more for these. If you are looking for a great all rounder, you can’t go far wrong with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy R. Although the Galaxy S2 is the manufacturer’s current flagship smartphone, think about this; if the Galaxy R was available just a year ago, it would have been the most powerful smartphone available at the time.
