Market Press Release – January 12, 2012 4:04 pm – Among its numerous recent releases, HTC is now offering two new budget handsets, the Explorer and Rhyme. In this article, I will compare the two based on some of their key features.

Camera
One of the most important features for many when choosing a new smartphone is the camera. The HTC Rhyme offers a 5 megapixel camera, whereas the pixel count on the Explorer is slightly less at 3.15 megapixels. Both offer the useful geo-tagging function, which automatically records the location where the photo was taken, based on the handsets’ GPS capabilities. The Rhyme has a few additional features such as LED flash, and autofocus. Therefore, the HTC Rhyme comes out ahead as far as the camera feature is concerned.

Memory
In order to store your files on your phone, it is important that the handset has ample memory. The HTC Rhyme comes with 4GB as standard, compared to the modest 90 MB offered by the HTC Explorer. Both handsets also have the ability to increase the memory by utilising the micro SD slot which can accommodate a memory card of up to 32 GB. The HTC Rhyme comes with an 8 GB card included, so like the camera, the Rhyme heats the Explorer in this respect.

Screen
Both handsets have touchscreens to operate the interface as well as display the contents. However, the screens on both devices are very different. The HTC Rhyme has a 3.7 inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen, with a resolution of 480x 800, so very good picture quality can be expected along with a more responsive means of navigating the interface. The HTC Explorer’s screen is a 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, which is slightly less advanced than that of the Rhyme, and it also has a slightly lower pixel resolution, however this is to be expected because it stands at a lower price point.

As you can see, from the features outlined above, the HTC Rhyme offers more advanced technology than the HTC Explorer. Because of this, I would recommend the HTC Rhyme above the Explorer, although this does not mean that the latter is by any means a bad phone. In fact it would be preferable over the Rhyme of you are looking to buy your first smartphone, you do not want to spend too much on a new handset, or if you are not particularly fussed about owning the best technology. Both handsets are currently available on SIM free deals, as well as O2 deals, which offer both handsets for free on selected tariffs.
