Of particular interest are Jeep tire covers and Custom tire covers for other vehicles which have their spare tire very sensibly uptight on the tail gate where it is accessible and may well acts as a buffer should you be rammed from behind.
The idea of putting the spare tire on the tail gate is a remarkably intelligent one for a number of reasons. The primary reason of course is ease of access. Most vehicles nowadays drive almost exclusively on paved roads. In addition most tires these days have a steel band around them which assist in their durability. Consequently, provided due care is maintained with inflation balancing and wheel alignment there is minimal chance of a flat.
As a result of this many autos have ceased to supply a full sized spare tire but instead there is a \"biscuit\" a thin steel rim with a narrow tire that is designed to enable the driver, in the unlikely even of a flat tire, to get to the next tire shop and repair his puncture or replace as indicated. It must be emphasized that these \"biscuits\" are designed for that purpose only; they are not a spare wheel and should never be used at high speed. Another element of the biscuit is that it consumes minimal room in the trunk.
4WD vehicles, on the other hand, are meant to go off road. This means that the tire pressure should be reduced for traction and footprint, not to mention comfort. But unpaved roads present all sorts of hazards and punctures or wheel damage is a strong possibility. The other thing about 4WD vehicles, especially Jeeps, is that they do not really have very big storage space.
A person going hunting, fishing or camping always needs as much space in the rear as they can as a lot of the gear is bulky. If the spare tire was also in the rear it would be in the way and driver, who have been going off road often and never had a puncture might be disposed to leave it out.
This is not a good idea as everyone knows Murphy\'s law (If anything can go wrong it will!) and the day you embark on a journey without a spare is the day you have a flat.
So most 4WD vehicles, be they serious off road contenders or Sports Utility vehicles with an off road capability, all tend to put a full spare on the tail gate.
But these spare tires need protection from the elements. Leave any rubber in the sun for too long and it will start to deteriorate.
